The Morrisseys Cup
An inter-club competition created to give more golfers the chance to represent their club. Celebrating 250 years of the rich history of Abbeyleix and one of its most famous establishments Morrissey’s Pub. Competitive, inclusive and built on pride, community and team golf.

Abbeyleix 250 Years of History & Community
In 1775, Abbeyleix was formally founded, following the vision of the first Viscount Thomas de Vesci and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Selina de Vesci, who laid the foundation stone for their new home in 1773 the building that would become Abbeyleix House. From those beginnings, the town grew into a place defined by community, tradition, and continuity.
Two and a half centuries later, Abbeyleix continues to celebrate its past while creating new stories. The Morrissey’s Cup was established as part of this milestone year, recognising not just the history of the town, but the people, places, and institutions that have shaped everyday life in Abbeyleix across generations.
Morrissey’s Pub A Shared Anniversary
Founded in the same year as the town itself, Morrissey’s Pub has stood at the heart of Abbeyleix life for 250 years. It has been a place of conversation, celebration, commiseration and community. A constant presence as the town evolved around it.
The Morrissey’s Cup proudly carries this shared anniversary in its name. With Morrissey’s Pub as tournament sponsor, the competition reflects the deep connection between local business, local sport, and local people. It is a fitting partnership that brings together two institutions rooted in the same community.

A Competition for Golfers under represented
The Morrissey’s Cup has been created with a very clear purpose, to give opportunity where opportunity is often limited. This inter-club competition is open to male golfers with handicaps from 22.5 to 30, players who may not often find themselves representing their club as often in traditional inter-club formats.
By design, this competition celebrates commitment, participation, and pride rather than elite status. It recognises the backbone of every golf club the golfers who turn up week in, week out, support club events, and play the game for enjoyment, friendship, and community. The Morrissey’s Cup gives those golfers a platform to compete, represent their club, and be part of something special.
Why Enter the Morrissey’s Cup
The Morrissey’s Cup is about more than just golf. It’s about marking a once in a generation anniversary, strengthening inter-club connections, and creating memories that will last long after the final putt drops.
For Abbeyleix Golf Club, it is a proud addition to the club calendar a new tradition born from history. For visiting clubs, it offers a welcoming, competitive, and meaningful event in a historic setting. With an entry fee of €100 per team, the tournament represents excellent value, strong competition, and the chance to be part of a unique celebration tied directly to Abbeyleix’s 250th year.
This is a competition with purpose, story, and heart and one well worth entering.
